Optician vs. Optometrist There are a lot of differences when it comes to an optician and an optometrist. These differences are evident in the job duties, educational requirements and pay rates between opticians and optometrists. The names of these two separate distinctions may sound similar, but they are really vastly different.
The difference between an orthoptist and an optometrist The difference between an orthoptist and an optometrist is that an orthoptist specialises in the evaluation and nonsurgical treatment of visual disorders caused by imbalance of the eye muscles, such as strabismus (crossed eye or squint) and Amblyopia (lazy eye).
After obtaining a bachelor's degree, they must complete four years of medical school and at least four years of residency in a medical facility. An optometrist receives a doctor of optometry (OD) degree after completing four years of optometry school, preceded by three years or more years of college. They are licensed to practice optometry, which primarily involves performing eye exams and vision tests, prescribing and dispensing corrective lenses, detecting certain eye abnormalities, and prescribing medications for certain eye diseases. An optician is someone who assists customers with the selection and fitting of eyeglasses. An optometrist is someone who performs refractions and provides basic medical eye care.
