A stress test is performed to see if any part of the heart has decreased blood flow. It is typically ordered to determine if specific symptoms are related or not related to the heart. Some examples of those symptoms are chest pain, chest heaviness and shortness of breath. All of these symptoms could be caused by the heart.
An electrocardiogram (ECG) monitors your heart's electrical rhythms. The doctor also measures your blood pressure and monitors whether you have symptoms like chest discomfort or fatigue. A satisfactory ETT requires exercising to a workload capacity of at least six METS (through Bruce Stage II or equivalent) attaining a heart rate of >85% of predicted maximum (unless on beta blockers), a rise in SBP>20mmHg without angina, and having no significant ST segment depression or elevation.
